This Privacy Policy explains how Web Summarizer collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the extension, the related backend services, and connected features.
Web Summarizer is a browser extension that summarizes web pages, explains selected text, supports chat-style follow-up questions, optionally lets users sign in with Google, and includes optional YouTube and PDF helper features.
By using Web Summarizer, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
What We Collect
We collect only the information needed to operate the extension and related services.
1. Information stored locally in your browser
Depending on which features you use, the extension may store the following in Chrome storage:

- Optional third-party service settings you enter, such as a DumplingAI API key, DumplingAI endpoint, or PDF conversion endpoint.
- A locally stored authentication token after sign-in.
- A locally generated device ID used for abuse prevention and rate limiting.
- Local chat history for the current page, including recent prompts, assistant responses, compressed summaries, and optional image data.
Some settings are stored using Chrome sync storage and may sync across browsers logged into the same Chrome profile. Auth tokens, device IDs, and page chat history are stored locally on the device.

When Information Is Shared
We share information only as needed to provide the service or comply with legal obligations.
1. Our backend and infrastructure
Extension requests are sent to our backend service to provide summarization, chat, account, review, and chat-history features.
2. AI and feature-processing providers
Depending on the feature you use and the current backend configuration, information may be sent to third-party processors such as:
- Vercel AI Gateway and the AI model provider used behind that gateway.
- OpenAI-compatible API providers used by the backend.
- Google, for Google sign-in token verification.
- DumplingAI, if you use YouTube transcript extraction and have configured that feature.
- A PDF conversion service endpoint, if you use PDF conversion.
These third parties process data under their own terms and privacy policies.
3. Legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or a good-faith belief that disclosure is necessary to protect rights, safety, security, or investigate abuse.
4. Business changes
If ownership of the service changes, relevant data may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.
Data Retention
We retain data for different periods depending on the feature:
- Local browser settings remain until you change them, clear browser extension storage, or uninstall the extension.
- Locally stored chat history remains until you clear it or uninstall the extension.
- Backend chat history cache is designed to expire after approximately 5 hours.
- Rate-limit and abuse-prevention records may be retained for operational and security purposes.
- Account, review, and related service records may be retained as long as needed to operate the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce policies.
Cookies and Tracking
The extension does not use cookies, advertising pixels, or third-party analytics SDKs inside the extension for advertising purposes.
However, our backend may process technical request data such as IP address, device ID, user agent, and request timestamps for security, abuse prevention, rate limiting, and service operations.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

You can:
- Uninstall the extension at any time.
- Clear locally stored extension data through Chrome extension storage or the extension UI where available.
- Sign out of your account and remove locally stored auth tokens.
- Avoid using optional features such as Google sign-in, screenshot-based chat, YouTube transcript extraction, or PDF conversion.
